The basics

What a power of attorney does

A power of attorney is a document that gives another person authority to act on your behalf. The person you name is often called your agent.

Putting one in place ahead of time means someone you trust can step in without a court process if the need ever arises.

A few things worth knowing:

  • A financial power of attorney covers money matters, such as bills and accounts
  • You choose who acts for you and can set limits on what they may do
  • It can take effect right away or only if you become unable to act
